Gift Ideas for the Man in Your Life: Men’s Skin Care Products

January 19th, 2011
2191429999 94e971d336 m Gift Ideas for the Man in Your Life: Mens Skin Care Products

Let’s face it: finding gift ideas for men can be tough. Valentine’s Day, you’re thinking chocolates or his favorite beverage. His birthday, a cake of course, and a tie? Gets old, seems kinda lame. A movie, a concert? Nice, but Why not really surprise him? You take good care of your skin. Why not help your favorite guy do the same with a gift of men’s skin care products, or maybe even a cosmetic dermatology treatment?

Men are catching on to the idea that it’s a part of good grooming to take care of their skin. Maybe you’ve seen a bottle or tube of “product” lurking around the bathroom! But, you should know that men’s skin is different from women’s, and that means extra attention when choosing men’s skin care products.

On average, a man’s skin is about 25% thicker than a women’s, and twice as oily. His skin oil is denser and more complex, due to the presence of testosterone. This means cleansing is key and proper cleansing agents are really important to remove impurities. Here’s the paradox. Even though it’s thicker, male skin tends to be more sensitive, because it generally undergoes a daily exfoliation process: shaving. Shaving reduces the skin’s natural layer of protection, increasing its fragility and producing dryness. Harsh bar soaps and alcohol-based colognes and aftershaves are just too drying.

Here’s where contacting a cosmetic dermatologist really makes sense. Choosing medical grade skin care products does more than just ensure efficacy. The delivery system of these products allows for deeper penetration of the active ingredients into damaged skin. Ask for cleansers and moisturizers designed for male skin, including those with vitamin C and other nutrients.

Dry skin from shaving can be further impacted by bathing. As many women know well, the daily run or workouts at the gym can lead to frequent showering, sometimes more than once a day. This can leave skin dried out! So, give your guy some advice along with your gift warm (not hot) showers; no harsh soaps, just wash where you really need it, then pat dry. And then, he’ll be ready to moisturize with the skin care product you’ve selected.

Men with outdoor jobs or active lifestyles often suffer from the environmental damage of sun and wind exposure. This brings on premature aging of the skin, with an increased statistical risk of skin cancer. The most common areas for men to develop skin cancer are on the back, shoulders, scalp, neck, ears and face all maximal sun exposure areas. It’s a fact that, on average, men do not notice suspicious skin growths as early as women, nor do they seek treatment as quickly.

And, as I’m the first to admit, the male psyche sometimes prefers not to concern itself with risks like ultraviolet radiation so men may be less likely to guard their skin with sunscreen, protective clothing, and hats. If this sounds like your sweetie, then a high-quality moisturizing sunscreen, some gentle (loving) nagging and a really cool hat could make the perfect birthday or Father’s Day gift!

If you want to pull out all the stops, give your man a skin care treatment. Your choices range on up to microdermabrasion or lazer treatments. But, to start simply, a facial massage and treatment makes a great gift. Look for a cosmetic dermatologist who uses essential oils with fruit, plant and marine extracts. Performed correctly, a facial increases the flow of blood and lymph to purify and energize the skin cells. He’ll feel pampered, relaxed and refreshed what a stress-reliever!

So if you’re stuck with that same old “What to give that guy” theme well, men’s skin care products are a unique way to say “I care.”

Will My Oily Skin Ever Go Away?

January 19th, 2011
4266533291 b535b7478a m Will My Oily Skin Ever Go Away?

The big question people with oily skin, or any type of skin problem, will always want to know is: Will it ever go away?

Oily skin, the result of overactive sebaceous glands (thus producing too much oil, or sebum), will always vary from person to person. The causes behind it are all very different, and these causes may often be the answer to whether or not you will always be stuck with oily skin.

Some people have chronically oily skin, and there is not much they can do about it. It is in their genetics to have sebaceous glands that continuously produce oil, thus leading them to have many, many years of dealing with oily skin and the problems it can bring, such as acne, dull appearance, shiny skin, and skin thickness.

Your best bet, in the case that you do have chronically oily skin, is to see a dermatologist and get the best possible products to help tame it. If you are going to have it for an extremely long time, you might as well go all out in treating it, taking the best care of your skin as you can, and checking up with your dermatologist regularly to see about your progress and to find out about any new possibilities in the area of oily skin relief.

Most people that have oily skin, however, do not have it chronically. Instead, oily skin crops up due to sudden hormonal changes. The most common reason for oily skin falls on the shoulders of teenagers who are going through puberty. Dealing with oily skin can last several years, as well as the frustration of acne outbreaks, but you can at least live with the thought that your oily skin will not last forever, certainly not far into your adult life.

Because of the hormonal fluctuations people go through during puberty, the sebaceous glands act up and produce more sebum than is necessary, leading to the aforementioned problems. But with good care and a decent amount of patience (avoid stress whenever possible!), you can lessen the problems of oily skin and be able to relax once your hormones have gone back to a less rambunctious state and freed your skin from excess oil.

There are also much shorter terms in which you may find a sudden oily skin problem. Women who are pregnant, start taking birth control, or go through other areas in life that can affect their hormone levels may find resulting oily skin and possibly acne breakouts. But no worries; like with puberty, once your hormones have gone back to normal, your oily skin should clear up.

Issues such as stress, exercise, and eating right may contribute to temporary dealings with oily skin. Stress has been a major link in sebum production and the appearance of acne, so stressing less may lead you to a more oil free and acne free life. Exercise is good for you, both inside and out, and can help clear up skin. Sitting around doing nothing is unhealthy, and while it will not be the cause of oily skin, it will do nothing to aid it. The same can be said for a good diet.

Eating junk food such as sweets and salty snacks are not directly related to sebum overproduction, but an improved diet with healthy fruits, vegetables, and other foods may help, as it will help your body overall in terms of nutrition and necessary vitamins and minerals.

The best you can do for your oily skin is to continue to cleanse, exfoliate, use toner, and blot as necessary throughout the day, especially if you have already found a routine that works for you. If you have yet to find a good routine and your oily skin is still a nuisance to you, then you should probably begin looking into a different skin care routine or question the effectiveness of some of your products.

Ask questions of others with oily skin to compare information or ask your dermatologist for possible solutions. Even if you have oily skin for a short time, knowing how to care for it can help you tone it down and have more patience as you wait for it to go away.

Oily Skin – Are Your Concerns Justified?

January 19th, 2011
5257652001 72a9aaa0f0 m Oily Skin Are Your Concerns Justified?

Recently you have realized a bit of an extra shine to your skin. Or perhaps you have noticed increased breakouts or sudden unexpected acne flare ups for apparently no reason.

There may be a few different things you have realized about your skin, either for quite some time or as of late, and now you have become concerned with this change in your skin. Have you become a person with an oily skin type?

People who have oily skin have several different symptoms. If you occasionally have one or two mild symptoms, then you can probably discount an abrupt overproduction of oil in your skin.

However, if you find that you have multiple symptoms or several of these symptoms are more severe than you would like them to be or think they should be, then you may want to look into making an appointment with your dermatologist or trying a few different tips to put a stop to oily skin.

Shiny or greasy look. Yes, this may seem like the most obvious, but many people can experience the occasional oily skin from time to time. Certain points in time when you can get worked up, such as a stressful moment, or during certain conditions within seasons, the glands that produce sebum may be triggered into making more than necessary.

A small hiccup in your normal body functions is nothing to worry about and can simply go away on its own. Appropriate cleansing should take care of this problem. However, if you find yourself with an extreme shine and several other symptoms, more work will be needed.

Enlarged pores. In normal skin, pores are small and sometimes can be hard to see at all. When you have oily skin, all the excess oil production can lead to enlarged pores. Squeezing enlarged pores may show an excess of a fatty substance; too much oil and probably foreign elements that are beginning to get caught in your skin.

Large pore size is a good indicator that you have oily skin and will probably have future problems due to these large pores. A good cleansing along with an astringent can help clean and tighten pores, or an appointment for a micro dermabrasion treatment can help clean out pores as well.

Prone to blemishes. Oily skin quite often leads to blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and other skin blemishes. This is because the oil traps dirt, dry skin, and other particles which clog up pores and lead to infections of bacteria or other general inflammations.

Acne breakouts frequently occur with people who have oily skin and this is not always restricted to the face. Too much oil on the back, shoulders, and chest can also lead to breakouts. Cleanse, exfoliate, and use products that will not aggravate acne further. Put medications on any outbreaks to help control and to prevent them later on.

Dull complexion. Having a dull complexion may sound contrary to the symptom of having a shiny face. However, your complexion refers to the overall look and coloring to your face. People with healthy, problem free skin (or as much as possible at least) have a healthy glow to them with the occasional rosy color.

It may sound like a fairy tale, but skin that is treated right and kept in top notch shape can achieve this great look. Oily skin drags down dead skin cells and other extra debris, adding to the dull look to your face. The changes in your body or in your environment can also be contributing to your oily skin and dull complexion.

Following your skin care regimen, exercising, and making sure of good nutrition in your diet can help your oily skin and ultimately adjust your complexion from dull to healthy.

With this information, you can make a better decision regarding whether you truly have oily skin or not. If so, you can begin making changes by finding out the underlying cause of your oily skin and making the necessary adjustments.

If you realize you do not actually have an oily skin problem, you can wait for your skin to balance itself out and stop worrying about any drastic changes in your choice of skin care products and practices.
